The Posture and Mobility Electronic Referral Form

This one day foundation course aims to enhance the skills of health professionals who refer to the Artificial Limb and Appliance Service (ALAS) for standard wheeled mobility provision, and those who refer to ALAS for assessment.

Who is the course suitable for?

Registered healthcare practitioners such as Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, General Practitioners, Nurses and Medical staff who work in Wales and refer to ALAS for equipment or an assessment by the service.

The course is free, offered throughout Wales and can be organised locally if there are sufficient numbers of participants and a suitable venue is available.

Ideally there should be between 6 and 16 participants to run a training day.

The course runs from approximately 09.00 until 15.30. Times are flexible to meet the learning needs of participants, though sufficient numbers of people need to attend for the training day to go ahead.

Course Aims:

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Understand the theory & principles underlying postural management with particular reference to pelvic stability. Measure someone accurately for a wheelchair.
  • Complete the referral form accurately.
  • Understand the processes and systems of ALAS.
  • Recognise and select standard wheelchairs and cushions.
  • Provide the necessary information to indicate referrals requiring an assessment by ALAS.

Outcome:

  • Participants will have greater knowledge and confidence when referring for standard wheelchairs and cushions.
  • ALAS will receive comprehensive and accurate information on the referral form to enable appropriate decisions to be made regarding provision.
  • Service users receive the correct size equipment in a timely manner.
