Following changes to the way apprenticeships are funded nationally, the UHB is now required to pay into an apprenticeship levy, this equates to approximately £2.4 million each year. Levy funds can be used to offer fantastic development opportunities for existing UHB staff. An apprenticeship will lead to you mastering new skills or higher level skills that are required for your job. Staff of any age or grade can gain additional professional qualifications that support the role they are performing.
What are the Commitments
Apprenticeships are development opportunities that require commitment from both the individual doing the apprenticeship and their manager. The support from the manager is crucial for the staff member to be able to complete this qualification. Lack of support is one of the main reasons for staff withdrawing from a qualification such as this. Almost all of the qualifications are completed in the workplace and will require you to have monthly assessor visits lasting 60 - 90 minutes. It is important that you maintain regular contact with your assessor.
You should discuss with your line manager whether an apprenticeship is the best way to support your development needs or if an alternative training intervention would be more appropriate. You can undertake an apprenticeship at the same level as, or at a lower level than, a qualification you already hold, if the apprenticeship will allow you to acquire substantive new skills and you can evidence that the training is materially different from any prior qualification or a previous apprenticeship. Awareness sessions take place monthly across the UHB for you to gain further information from the course provider.
You must ensure that you have had a Values Based Appraisal "VBA" within the last 12 months which has been recorded on ESR and that you have completed all 13 modules of the mandatory training.
