Capability - the role of the manager

It is the responsibility of all line managers to manage the performance of individuals/teams.  

Managers are encouraged to engage in open and honest conversations with their team all year round and not just at the formal annual Performance Development Review (PADR)

Whilst you may not like to think about dealing with poor performance, it is critical that we do in order to ensure that we maintain our high standards of patient care and continue to be a great place to work and learn.

Before you do this it may be helpful to consider if there is anything that could be causing the issue from a management perspective -  a  checklist has been developed to help you with this.  

In many cases of under-performance relating to capability, a relatively informal approach which includes consideration of these points at an early stage may be enough to address the issue.
